Summary
The summer Hattie turns 12, her predictable smalltown life is turned on end when her uncle
Adam returns home for the first time in over ten years. Hattie has never met him, never
known about him. He's been institutionalized; his condition involves schizophrenia and
autism. Hattie, a shy girl who prefers the company of adults, takes immediately to her
excitable uncle, even when the rest of the family -- her parents and grandparents -- have
trouble dealing with his intense way of seeing the world. And Adam, too, sees that Hattie is
special, that her quiet, shy ways are not a disability
Review
You have to see this from my side of view: I love this book not only for it's wonderful plot,
but also because how Ann M. Martin placed everything in the 19th century and made it so
descriptive, and I loved her dilemma too. Hattie is a wonderful character, she's special and
unique and probably the most different character I've read about this year. I loved how
Hattie could understand Adam completely, and how you could really fell the sadness, anger,
frustration,a nd all of his emotions when everything happened. I loved the suspense, but
maybe Ann M. Martin could have held it out a little bit longer-it would make more people get
hooked-not that the overall story wouldn't make the person already hooked, but keeping the
suspense out just makes it better. The cover was beautiful-I loved the picture of the old
ferris wheel with bright colored seats against a gray blue sky. I also loved the color and font
of the title-it makes it stand out nicely. I also loved how the top part of teh picture of the
ferris wheel was all clear as day, while towards the bottom it started fogging up. This book
deserves to be a newberry honor book-it really does.
